A positive pregnancy test is only an indication of pregnancy. We can provide you with a referral for a free and confidential ultrasound to confirm your pregnancy is growing and how far along you are.
What is an Ultrasound?
An ultrasound is an imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to make an image of the inside of your body.
The ultrasound technician (sonographer) places a gel on your abdomen. They then rub a wand-like instrument called a transducer through the gel. The transducer picks up the echoes of sound waves inside the body and produces an image with black and white dots.
You can view the image on a computer screen. It provides the necessary information you need about your pregnancy.
Why Do I Need An Ultrasound?
There is more to know about your pregnancy than a positive pregnancy test and a few pregnancy symptoms. Ultrasound answers the following questions:
- Where is my pregnancy located? A normal pregnancy grows in the uterus. Sometimes, a pregnancy occurs in the wrong location. This is known as an ectopic pregnancy and can be life-threatening.
- How far along is the pregnancy? Knowing the exact date of when you became pregnant is essential to look at your options.
- Is the pregnancy growing, or have you had a miscarriage? Experts estimate that over one in four pregnancies end in an early miscarriage. You can still get a positive pregnancy test days or even weeks following a miscarriage.
