Adoption has been part of my language since I was a little girl, when I remember watching commercials asking for support for starving children. It was then that I announced to my mom: “I’m going to adopt those kids when I grow up!”
Those words would be just a faint memory as my husband and I struggled with infertility early in our marriage. After a few years of medical treatments, many doctors and surgeries, we decided to try adoption. This was truly God’s road for us, as he blessed us with two girls over the years through open adoption. Our first was born in 2002 in Fort Worth, and our second in 2011 in Sugar Land, Texas. Both of them are blessings to us, and adoption has been an experience that has grown us and stretched us in more ways than we could have ever imagined.
Adoption has shown us more about God’s adoption of us and a glimpse into Jesus’ sacrifice to make that a possibility. Our love for our girls’ birthmothers has multiplied, as we see the sacrificial love it took to place their child. And, God has used our struggle of infertility to minister to and encourage other couples over the years.
My background is in Marketing and Public Relations. I had worked in that area for about 13 years, when the Lord shifted my direction and I joined a church staff as Children’s Director/Elementary Director for the next 10 years. My husband was recruited for a position in College Station, and we felt the Lord calling our family for our first major move after 18 years in the same city. The Lord used a new friend in our new church to mention APO to me, and I started looking into what this amazing ministry was all about. I took a leap of faith and contacted Kim to offer my services in Marketing should she ever need them down the road. Turns out, she did!
What a blessing it is that the Lord has directed me to APO. I oversee marketing for APO, helping this organization to spread the word about open adoption to the community and increasing awareness about our programs to foundations and supporters. I love being part of the story that God weaves as He uses APO to dramatically affect change and change the very lives of women and their children born through unplanned pregnancies.
