Nicole and Kenneth Dean had been praying for a baby and going through fertility treatments for years. After many disappointments, they began the adoption process with Aggieland Pregnancy Outreach in the fall of 2016. In July of 2017, they were thrilled to be matched with a strong and courageous birth mom. On August 7th, 2017, precious Asher Michael Dean was born and Nicole and Kenneth were ecstatic new parents.
It was quickly discovered, however, that Asher needed open heart surgery to fix an arterial issue. Nicole, Kenneth and Asher were sent to the ICU at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, where Asher would wait to become stronger and have surgery within the next few weeks.
On August 20th, Kenneth drove back home to New Braunfels to get some work done at his company (NB Pest Control) while waiting to hear on Asher’s surgery date. That night, a debilitating headache prompted him to contact his in-laws, who quickly took him to the ER. After tests and an MRI, he was transferred to the ICU at St. Luke’s in San Antonio with possible bacterial meningitis.
In ICU, Kenneth’s symptoms rapidly escalated. Nicole and other family members quickly traveled from the hospital in Houston to St. Luke’s in San Antonio. Despite efforts from the hospital staff, Kenneth passed away of meningitis on August 23.
The staff at APO grieves with the Dean family. Kenneth was an example to us of a man who whole-heartedly loved his Savior. Kenneth had written several letters to family and friends over the years; letters of encouragement which were evidence of the strong faith he had in Christ. Even in death, Kenneth’s own words have given us comfort.
Our prayers remain with Nicole and Asher. They are surrounded by amazing family and friends who will help carry them through this difficult time.
